1. Introduction

Beyond Recovery is a "bridge book" meant to join the recovery and nondual spirituality communities. It introduces nondual spirituality to people in recovery, and recovery to people in nondual spirituality.

Oftentimes in recovery, perhaps after several months or years clean, participants will reach what is called "the plateau." At this point they can begin to feel like they are a bit "boxed in" by their tradition's dogma. Recovery can begin to feel like a "circular path," that doesn't allow for the type of spiritual engagement they feel drawn to seek. By the same token, members are reluctant to abandon what's been working for them, and rightfully fearful of leaving their group. Beyond Recovery offers them a way to find deep, authentic spirituality either within a recovery program, or upon leaving one.

People in nondual spirituality often look at the structure and dogma--however good and necessary both might be for most people--and feel like they have no reasonable place to turn for help with their addiction problems. Beyond Recovery offers a fresh new view of both recovery and the twelve steps, one that adherents of nondual spirituality will find both welcoming and conducive to a high a level of authentic spiritual practice, and clean, clear living.

The author's "sobriety date" is March 30, 2000. He was closely involved in a twelve step program for over 11 years. He was an active sponsor, speaker, working with a huge array of alcoholics and addicts over the years, and speaking to thousands.

I am a recovered Alcoholic that has been practicing the 12 step for the last 15 years. I had a spiritual awakening at Step 5 in the program I belong to. As time has gone on I find that the rooms of 12 step recovery do not meet my spiritual needs like they use to. This book is amazing! Its perfect for me. I feel a strong sense of truth when I read this book and it gives my spirit a sense of ease. Thank you Fred it is truly a gift to the recovery community!

A wonderful tie-in of the 12 steps with The Understanding. Fred Davis' approach is confirming and strengthening this one's journey of recovery and realization. Many thanks!
